Finish the full course

Even once symptoms improve, stopping antibiotics early can leave surviving bacteria that are harder to treat the next time. Always complete the full course exactly as prescribed, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Timing and spacing matter

Many antibiotics work best when taken at evenly spaced intervals to keep a steady level in your bloodstream. Setting a phone reminder helps, especially for courses that require three or four doses a day.

Food, drink and interactions

Some antibiotics should be taken with food to avoid stomach upset, while others work better on an empty stomach. Ask our pharmacists when you collect your prescription, we'll flag anything you should avoid, including certain other medicines or alcohol.

Antibiotics don't treat everything

Colds, flu and most sore throats are caused by viruses, which antibiotics cannot treat. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily contributes to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat for everyone.

If you miss a dose or feel worse

Take a missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for the next one, never double up. If your symptoms worsen or you develop a rash or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
